A Saviour for Ishmar

The Abbey and Beyond

A synopsis of last night’s adventure and the starting point for this weeks:

Before you left the outpost, Barovia Mayor Alexandra Appleton handed you a letter asking for aid from Prestigiae Abbey and University. The letter also said that the mayor was dead and the council was disbanding following the missive. When asked what that meant, Alexandra nodded and walked off. You set off for the abbey (a day’s ride from the outpost.)

When you reached the abbey, you were greeted by Brother Tye Culver, the professor of herbology and healing at the university. Brother Culver brought you into meet the abbot who was rather cold (especially toward Valen for some reason.) The abbot said that the survivors would be working in the kitchens and in the mills, while you all would be guests in the university. You were shown to your lodging by Brother Culver.

You all befriend several of the students, namely Velma Buck (I know that’s not the name I gave you last night, but we’ll roll with it…) Brother Kevmorn befriended Mother Gwendolyn Youngren (youngest daughter of the Governess of Seleva.) Yegoth hit it off well with the skilled laborers, some of whom are Barovian.

After classes one evening, Brother Culver asked Brother Kevmorn to speak in his chambers. Kevmorn was told that the abbot was believed to be a conspirator of the Order of the Black Veil. The abbot was going to be in Elena’s Green for a week, leaving one week from the time when Culver spoke. During that week, there would be no classes—students were on leave for the harvest festival. Brother Culver asked for your assistance in some subversive act that night. More follow. Mother Gwendolyn translated the note (written in the language of Rooshroom) which read “Heed my warning, silver-tongued one. You will die. Heed my warning, blood traitor. You will die. Heed my warning, priest. You will die.”

The same evening that Brother Culver asked Brother Kevmorn’s assistance, a halfling commoner burst onto the campus demanding to see the abbot. When the abbot finally granted an audience, the halfling complained of having his daughter—and the daughters of other halflings in his camp—kidnapped by a bunch of “big, godde-damned ogre, orc, mothercarters.” The abbot offered your assistance in helping Enthinol Speltz, the halfling.

You were taken to the tomb of a long-deceased wizard-fighter, Dorl Tavanyi. Kevmorn remembers that Mother Gwendolyn’s lecture that afternoon was on Dorl and the cult that he amassed for himself. When you entered the tomb, you were faced with a pit and a door on the otherside of the pit. Kevmorn and Yegoth went down the side of the pit and back up. Valen skirted his way across using rogue-like abilities. There were two bugbears waiting for you all. Before you killed them, they were able to ring the bell in the guard post. You healed up and barricaded the doors in the room for 8 rounds. You are now left waiting…

That’s where we’ll start off today. Hopefully Brother Kevmorn read up on the funeral rites. He may need them for his companions…although…perhaps they’ll need the rites for the cleric first. :O

After Spring Break

We will resume promptly after Spring Break. I will be posting things to the wiki and emailing you information that your character might know (and the others might not.) Let’s talk about when we’re available after Spring Break. I’ll have a solid amount of adventure ready (including, perhaps, your deaths!)

In any case, take care and enjoy break!

A Note from the Father

We’ll start from here this evening:

*It has taken you a a few days to explore the ruins of abbey, heal up, rest up, and gather together what little you could salvage from this now-ruined centre of progress and ingenuity. As you are beginning to pack up your things and leave, a young man on a mule rides right into the former sanctuary of the abbey. He is wearing the colours of Lady Alexandra Appleton, Mayor of Barovia.

“I come with word from Lady Alexandra. It is urgent!” At this, the rider hands you a sealed scroll that, when opened, reads in Celestial:

Brother Kevmorn and Party,

You must leave the abbey immediately and you must not return to Barovia. Recent developments dictate it so. Do not finish your task, whatever it may be and do not return to Barovia. It is far too dangerous. I can’t write more now. The Council plans to flee Barovia, though I will not tell you where we will flee to-just in case this message is intercepted. Should you desire to find us, I trust that you’ll find the way. I pray that Yashiel met up with you? She was so set on following your party that I can not stop her from leaving.

Stay safe,

o Father Jatham*

Session One
A brief synopsis

As the town of Barovia was planning for the return of their beloved Mollie McTynker, a beautiful gem of a young woman, the PCs made their entrance onto the scene. Yegoth, a half-orc barbarian, came in as a hired body guard for a dwarven merchant from Elena’s Green. Thalen, a human rogue, was wandering in, also coming from Elena’s Green. Brother Kevmorn, a human cleric, is a member of the local clergy.

The celebration continued until a horse rode into town with a deceased rider—one of the Governess’ Men sent to help return Mollie, as well as bring down the group of bandits who overturned and destroyed Haversham Abbey, the former home of a group of innovative cloistered clerics and monks. The Council of Elders decided not to take immediate action due to hesitation on behalf of some of the Councilors. The PCs met one another and ventured out (with the unofficial support of Alexandra Appleton, the Mayor of Barovia and the priest-in-charge, Father Jatham.

They set out after Bro. Kevmorn’s morning prayers (where Sister Yashiel, the other assisting cleric, was absent.) Two half-orc thugs could not stop the adventuring party. The party arrives at the abbey and camped out.

Two Will o’ Wisps were the “glowing eyes” of legend. They were deceased. The abbey is more-or-less in ruins (with the exception of the former abbot’s chambers. The party encountered a halfling sorcerer named Grath in the former abbot’s chambers. He referred to Mollie McTynker as “Her Ladyship” and said that she would kill them just like she killed the Governess’ Men. He said that she promised him a life in eternity for his compliance. He also said that many of Her Ladyship’s partymembers were dead, but not all. Through some spell, he was able to communicate with Mollie (or said he could), by point out the window.

After finding circular diamonds and snooping around the library, the party found a treasure vault with a large amount of treasure.

Experience earned: 1,400 XP—level up, please

Treasures can be found in the Look area of the wiki.

Next session is scheduled for Wednesday night at around 8:45 in the CSB Campus Ministry offic in Murray Hall at CSB (unless Monday at the same time would work.)

Thanks for a prosperous session today,

Preliminary Information
Let's do it!

In order for us to being playing on Sunday (please note that this session will be brief as I’ve not had much time to prepare), I need for the following information to be linked (as in…copy and paste the links into a comment to this post, so that I can easily find your information) to me:

  • Find your character’s profile in the wiki section and edit it with any public information. If you have private information that you’d like to share with me, email it to me (cemaynus@csbsju.edu) and I’ll add it to the DM-only section of your profile. You must include name, race, class, local or visitor (if so, why?), occupation/profession/what you’re doing in town.
  • Pictures are good. If you can find a nice picture, add it to your character’s wiki profile.
  • Fill in the blank: “I want ________ out of this campaign.”

Thank you gentlemen. See you at 2pm tomorrow. We’ll meet around the Boni lounge and decide where to go.

Welcome to Seleva!
